Mumbai's Textile Heritage: Museum Expansion Planned

The BMC's Textile Museum project, located at the India United Mills compound in Kalachowki, has experienced significant delays, pushing its initial 2024 completion date due to the pandemic and subsequent changes in priorities.

In 2009, the concept of transforming 32,000 square meters of India United Mills 2 and 3 into a museum dedicated to Mumbai's textile history was proposed, leading the National Textile Corporation Limited (NTCL) to transfer the mill compound to the BMC under an Integrated Development Scheme (IDS).

Despite the 2009 proposal, construction on the textile museum, with an estimated cost of Rs. 200 crores, only commenced after the BMC standing committee's 2019 approval, subsequently facing pandemic-related delays and a shift in focus towards essential infrastructure projects.
